MOUNT SOREL

The Battle of Mount Sorrel took place in June 1916 and involved the 2nd Battalion, CEF, whose history and battle honours are perpetuated by the Regiment.
After enduring intense fighting and severe enemy bombardment, the 2nd Battalion held its positions while two other Canadian battalions leap-frogged over them to successfully assault and regain lost trenches at Mount Sorrel and Sanctuary Wood on June 14, 1916. The fighting was so desperate that the 77th Battalion, which was awaiting orders in England, had to be broken up to provide immediate reinforcements to fill the gaps in the lines. By the time the 2nd Battalion was relieved from this continuous action, they had suffered 422 casualties, losing almost half of their entire fighting strength. In recognition of their endurance and service during this period, the unit was awarded the battle honour “Mount Sorrel”.
