The 21st Canadian Armoured Regiment (G.G.F.G.), operating as part of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division, began its journey to France on July 17, 1944. Delayed by bad weather and the threat of submarines in the English Channel, the main body of the Regiment landed in Normandy on July 24, 1944. They disembarked over the open sands of Juno Beach near Vaux, two miles west of Courseulles-sur-Mer, and immediately moved inland to remove their vehicles’ waterproofing equipment and prepare for the breakout battles ahead.
