POZIERES

Battle of Pozières
On September 9, 1916, the 2nd Battalion, CEF (whose history and honours are perpetuated by the Regiment) was tasked with capturing the last remaining section of Pozières Ridge still in German hands. This ridge was considered vital ground because it allowed the enemy to observe deep into the Allied rear. Following an artillery bombardment, the Battalion successfully assaulted the position and held it against determined German counter-attacks, effectively blinding the enemy in that sector. The victory was costly, with the Battalion suffering heavy casualties, but their crucial achievement earned the Regiment the battle honour “Pozières”. During this intense fighting, Corporal Leo Clarke was awarded the Victoria Cross for his extreme valour in almost single-handedly fighting off a German counter-attack while consolidating a newly captured trench.
