“Veen” is a Battle Honour awarded to the 21st Canadian Armoured Regiment (GGFG) for its actions on March 8, 1945, during the Rhineland campaign.
The Battle of VeenFollowing the battle of the Hochwald, the Regiment prepared to attack the German town of Veen on March 6, 1945. However, the plan was altered, and the main assault was assigned to the 52nd British Division and the British Guards Armoured Division. The GGFG was ordered to support this British attack.
• Tactics: On March 8, No. 2 and No. 3 Squadrons moved northeast of Sonsbeck. With Lieutenant Finlayson acting as a Forward Observation Officer, the tanks were used in an artillery role, engaging targets in Veen with indirect fire.
• Direct Fire: Simultaneously, No. 1 Squadron moved directly west of Veen to engage the town with direct fire.
