The Cartier Square Drill Hall (CSDH) was constructed beginning in February 1879 on the western bank of the Rideau Canal to replace the inadequate wooden “Drill Shed” previously used by the Regiment. Designed by Thomas Seaton Scott in an Italian architectural style, the hall took eight months to build and originally featured a hard-packed earth floor, gas lighting, and heating provided by eight cast-iron stoves.
The opening of the hall was marked on November 10, 1879, when the Regiment marched from their old quarters to the new Drill Hall to welcome their Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Ross, upon his return from a trip to Europe. The band played “Home, Sweet Home” as the Colonel arrived at the new building.
It should be noted that the Drill Hall underwent a major renovation between 1993 and 1996 to restore it to its original appearance; a “March In” parade to re-occupy the building was held on September 15, 1996.
