NORTH WEST EUROPE 1944-45

“North West Europe, 1944-45” is a general Battle Honour awarded to the 21st Canadian Armoured Regiment (GGFG) for its service in the European theatre during the Second World War.
The North West Europe Campaign
Scope: This honour covers the Regiment’s operations from its arrival in France in July 1944 through to the German surrender in May 1945.
Route: The campaign involved the pursuit across France to the Somme, the clearing of the Scheldt estuary in Belgium, the winter battles in Holland, the Rhineland offensive, and the final drive into Germany.
Conclusion: The campaign ended for the Regiment at 08:30 a.m. on May 5, 1945, at Rastede, Germany, when the “Cease Fire” order was given.
Cost: During this campaign, the Regiment suffered 101 dead and 284 wounded. (Note: Appendix F lists higher casualty figures of 515 killed and 178 wounded for the service provided during World War Two, but the narrative history specifies the lower combat figures for the campaign itself).
