“Festubert, 1915” is a Battle Honour awarded to the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), and perpetuated by the Governor General’s Foot Guards.
The Battle of Festubert
• Context: Following the devastation of Ypres, the 2nd Battalion moved south to the Festubert area in May 1915. They were initially placed in Brigade Reserve near a location known as “Indian Village”.
• The Action: The Battalion relieved the 1st Battalion in the front line on May 28, 1915. The operations in this sector, characterized by attacks on strong points like “The Orchard,” were largely fruitless and costly for the Canadian Division as a whole.
• Casualties: During their five-day tour in the front line at Festubert, the 2nd Battalion suffered 2 killed and 31 wounded, including officers Captain G.G. Chrysler and Lieutenant G.H. Graham.
