YPRES

“Ypres, 1915, ’17” was awarded to the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), and is perpetuated by the Governor General’s Foot Guards.
The Battle of Ypres The honour encompasses operations in the Ypres Salient during two distinct years, but the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915 was particularly significant for the Regiment:
The Gas Attack: On April 22, 1915, the 2nd Battalion witnessed the first use of poison gas in modern warfare. They saw French colonial troops retreating in disorder, choking and blinded by the chlorine cloud. The Battalion was immediately ordered forward to reinforce the line and close the breach.
The Action: Between April 22 and April 29, the Battalion fought desperately to hold the left flank of the Canadian Division. They endured heavy shelling and repeated German attacks, often fighting in shallow trenches or open ground.
Casualties: The cost of holding the line was devastating. In the period of April 22–29, 1915, the Battalion suffered 544 casualties: 6 officers and 68 other ranks killed, 4 officers and 158 other ranks wounded, and 5 officers and 302 other ranks missing (most of whom were later confirmed killed or taken prisoner).
Significance: For its participation, the Battalion was awarded the battle honours “Ypres, 1915”, “Gravenstafel”, and “St. Julien”. The Regimental historical dates list specifically marks April 29, 1915, in relation to Ypres, marking the end of their first major trial by fire.
