“Arleux” is a Battle Honour awarded to the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), and is perpetuated by the Governor General’s Foot Guards.
The Battle of ArleuxThe battle took place on April 28, 1917.
• Context: Following the capture of Vimy Ridge, plans were made to continue the battle across the Douai Plain to capture the villages of Arleux and Fresnoy.
• The Action: The actual attack and capture of Arleux on April 28 was conducted by the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade. The 2nd Battalion (part of the 1st Brigade) participated in this operation by manning the Main Resistance Line from “Commandant’s House” to Farbus.
• Significance: The capture of Arleux was the necessary preliminary step for the subsequent attack on Fresnoy (May 3, 1917), in which the 2nd Battalion played the central role.
