FRANCE & FLANDERS

“France and Flanders, 1915-18” is a Battle Honour awarded to the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), known as the “Iron Second,” which is perpetuated by the Governor General’s Foot Guards.
The Battle Honour “France and Flanders” Unlike specific engagements such as Vimy or Hill 70, this honour recognizes the Battalion’s continuous service in the theatre of war throughout the conflict:
Service: It covers the period from the unit’s arrival in France in February 1915 until the end of the war in 1918.
Sacrifice: During this campaign, 242 Officers and 5,084 Other Ranks served in the “Iron Second,” of which 1,279 were killed and/or wounded.
Scope: This honour encompasses the Battalion’s participation in twenty-one engagements, including St. Julien, Festubert, the Somme, Vimy, and Passchendaele.
Arrival: The 2nd Battalion arrived at the front in Merris, France, in February 1915, where they first heard the distant guns and saw the signs of war.
