The dinner was started by the Sharpshooters to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Cut Knife Hill on the 2nd of May 1885. With the numbers of the Sharpshooters depleted over time the dinner was discontinued, only to be reestablished in 1927 by RSM E.FE. Morgan, and RQMS W.H. Lanceley. On the 60th Anniversary of the Battle for Cut Knife Hill, Brigadier Charles E Winter (a CSgt in 1885) presented the mess with a Plains Buffalo trophy. The Buffalo is now part of the opening and closing ceremony of the annual dinner.
